Higher education is education that is provided by universities, vocational universities, community colleges, liberal arts colleges, technical colleges, and other collegial institutions that award academic degrees, such as career colleges. At world level, the United Nations International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights of guarantees this right under its Article , which states that higher education shall be made equally accessible to all, on the basis of capacity, by every appropriate means, and in particular by the progressive introduction of free education.

You can learn a great deal about yourself while in college, interacting with new people in a new place. Professors in college are also quite different from teachers in high school. Generally speaking, they treat you as an adult. This of course also means that they expect you to behave as an adult and show responsibility. You have a great deal of freedom in picking what classes you take in college as well, so you can ensure that you pick subjects that genuinely interest you.

Nothing can better prepare you for any career than a college education.

That said, college is NOT for everyone. While I would never try to convince anyone to not go to college, I have to admit that college is not the best choice for everyone. If you go to college, take out student loans, and drop out, then all you have gained is a very large amount of debt. Most college students take out loans to pay for at least a part of their education. If you are truly interested in beauty school, if that is what you want to do with your life, then dont let anyone talk you out of it. After high school, the decisions you make affect YOUR life, not anyone elses, so those decisions are yours to make. As much as I value education, you will not be happy attending college if you are doing it to make someone else happy. By formal education I assume you mean college education and not training at a police academy. There are a number of benefits to this.

Addidtionally some departments give you an extra point or two on promotional exams, and others require you to have some level of college education to get promoted. This is why many departments are beginning to require college educations. College also opens the student up to other points of view and different people which may assist in dealing with people whom have differnt views, values, and beliefs than you. My last 2 yrs as an officer I taught classes at a community college, after I had recieved my masters degree. It was a helpful additional income, so thats another benefit. As a teacher, a businessman and someone who has also worked for a major university, let me share this information and I hope that its useful. Locate a community college in your area and seek out an admissions counselor. The cost of tuition at a local community college is almost always a fraction of that at a major university.

Talk to your professors about possible job or career paths; youll be amazed at how many different paths there are for any one degree or type.

The difference between a community college and a university is its main focus. Example; All of my economics courses at Texas Tech were taught by people from the middle east who could barely speak english much less economics. Not one economics course was ever taught by a professor for my business degree. UT had the same experience. The longer you are in school at the community college, the more financial aid options there will be available. Research grants, fellowships and loans. Have professors or admissions counselors assist you in transitioning to a university.

They have connections directly to most of the universitys that feed from them for students and do this for a living. They are some of your best allies, become friendly with them and use their knowledge and connections. As for grades, most community colleges arent going to be as concerned about your high school grades as a university would be. This is the best opportunity to show that you can take courses at that level and earn a top grade. Focus on building the best GPA you can at the community college and use this as your track record to share with a university.

Work a job even if only part time while in community college and at the university. If youre smart, work a part time job in the industry youre interested in. If youre interested in becoming a vet, work at an animal hospital. If you want to be an accountant, take a part time job as a proofer at an accounting firm. In this case, he was able to secure his career, his education, and his experience and drive his marketability in his field. Experience, connections, marketing, and education paid off for him and there are many more examples of this out there. An MBA is overrated, overweighted, and not really worth the money.
